Anna Smith Munroe
Anna Smith Munroe
1776
On the night of April 18, 1776 she was 33 years old and her husband had heard from
Solomon Brown, who had just returned from Boston, that the British were moving out.
Her husband called neighbor, John Raymond, to come to help her at the tavern, while he
left to guard John Hancock and Samuel Adams at the Clarke house.
In the middle of the night, when Anna heard the British approach, she took her
three small children and hid in the woods behind the Tavern.
We don't know for sure when she returned, but it was some time after the British
had retreated and used the Tavern as a hospital.
Later in Life
Anna died in Lexington on January 2, 1781, soon after giving birth to her 6th
child, Edmund.
