Hosmer Family

Family Background:
- In 1775 Joseph was 40 years old. He was born in Concord Massachusetts.
He married the former Lucy Barnes of Marlborough.
He was both a farmer and a cabinet maker.
He was an excellent speaker and people respected what he said.
He encouraged his neighbors to resist the British.
On the 19th of April he led a group of Concord Militianmen at the North Bridge.
Later in Live:
- He gathered supplies for the revolutionary army, travelling around the countryside.
At the same time he encouraged enlistment in the army.
He represented his fellow townspeople of Concord at the General Court and
stood his ground for what he believed in.
He loved to hear and to tell stories of the Revolutionary War and he was a great companion at the taverns.
He died Jan 13, 1821.
Lucy Barnes Hosmer:
- She was about 33 years old when she fell in love with Joseph Hosmer.
He came to her home in Marlborough to deliver some furniture to her father. Her father didn't approve of Joseph.
He wanted her to marry her rich cousin,
but she insisted and finally married Joseph on Christmas day
in 1761 and returned with him to his farm and shop in Concord.
The marriage has worked out well and her husband prospered.
She had five children, one of who died 10 days after she was born.
Her husband's spinster sister lived with them to help with the work.
On the eve of the Battle she was at home with Lavinia who was almost 13, Cyrus, 10, John 5
and Lucinda 2.
She worried because she had a large quantity of arms and ammunition
stored in the house and the British soldiers were coming to search for it.
Furtunately they did not find it.
Later in Life
She had another child, Rufus in 1778. She continued the life of a hard-working farm wife.
Her daughters married well fixed farmers.
Her oldest son, Cyrus, took over the family farm.
Her youngest son, Rufus, went to Harvard and became a successful lawyer in Stow.
She died August 7, 1818 at age 76.
