Sounds from Reënactment
Lexington Green: April 15, 1996
The following sounds were recorded on the Lexington Green
on the morning of April 15, 1996.
Recording was done by Ward Poor, i.e. not by students.
- Roll call by the Colonial Militia.
- Drum Roll by advancing British soldiers.
- "Fix your . . . . Bayonets!" . . . [sounds of bayonets]
- Shoulder your . . . . arms!
- ? . . . . Huzzah!
- ? ? ? . . [drum beat] . . "He won't get my gun!" . . First Shot.
- Heavy Gunfire & shouting.
- Questions:
- Is this a "Roll Call", or is it "sounding off", or what?
- What is Harrington's first name?
- "Drum Roll"? Drum beat? What is the musical term for this? What is military significance?
- Note the peculiar rhythm of this command:
How do they get the timing between "fix your" and "bayonets"?
Is it a certain number of marching steps?
- Ditto for "Shoulder your . . . arms!"
- What is the command before "Huzzah!"? (or was it "Hurrah!"?)
- The drumming before the first shot sounds menacing . . is there some military name for this?
