Did you know that one of Mr. Rogers' favorite poems is Casey at the Bat by Ernest Lawrence Thayer? As a special surprise for Mr. Rogers, Hastings Tutor Elaine Lail arranged for illustrator and Lexington resident Christopher Bing to read his new book Casey at the Bat at All School Meeting. Then Mr. Bing presented Mr. Rogers with an autographed copy of the book. The children got the chance to ask Mr. Bing questions - we learned that it took him eight years to complete the research and illustrations for his book!

You can find Casey at the Bat at Sundial Bookstore and The Story Loft in Lexington Center.

Second grade girls form Ms. Buxton's and Ms. Preston's class shared some funny jokes with us. How did the gum cross the road? It was stuck to the chicken's foot!

Mr. Banaszewski's fifth graders learned how systems worked and then described them in writing. At All School Meeting, the fifth graders made a game out of the assignment. Each student read his/her system's description, leaving its name out. The audience was asked to guess which object was being described. Can you guess what objects are being described below? Click here for the answer!

1. System__________ has seven different parts. It has the casing which holds the whole object together. There are two symmetrically triangular shredders that turn against each other and split the seeds for you. The metallic screw on top holds the silver handle that turns the long metallic rod. It connects to the shredders and splits the seeds in the interior of the wooden casing. A.
2. In my system there is a string that is skinny. The string holds a belt and the other side is connected to a spinner. The spinner is yellow and turns. A small black box is connected to the spinner. In the black box there are two gears, one big and one small, that help turn the spinner. On the other side of the small box is a white cylinder like thing that is attached to the big gear. This small thing can turn in the same direction as the spinner. On the opposite of the string is a belt. The belt is yellow and slightly rounded. All the things I mentioned make the belt go in and out of the system. In the system there is a head part. It has two triangles on top and a small circular thing on the bottom. There is a front and a back- they both hold and protect the interior of the system. The very bottom of the system is a bendable solid with a screw in it. On the sides are slightly bent back parts. The last three things make the system look complete. B.
3. My system has about nine parts and is a ______________. My system includes a frame which is smooth and metal. It helps keep the ____________ together. Attached to that is the tape. The tape is rolled up inside of the frame and it is bendable, thin and also has numbers on it. The tape goes in and out of the system. Attached to the tape is a holder that holds the tape in place. The spool is something that the tape wraps around. Attached to the spool is a spring. The spring is contained inside the spool. There is a frame that contains two halves. One of the halves is very dirty, shiny and helps keep the __________ together. The things that really hold the ____________ together are the screws that hold both halves of the frame together. The screws are bumpy and kind of round. Another one of the parts in my system is the belt hook- it is made of metal and it holds the _____________ on your belt. C.
