Learning at Sargent Camp
By Sophie
At Sargent Camp we did a ton of learning. We learned everything from mapping skills to learning how to cross an imaginary chocolate river. Everybody learned a lot about teamwork. We had to learn how to listen to other members of our group and
have a positive attitude. We learned from past experiences. The first time we had a challenge we only let a couple of people speak. When it failed we realized that it would have succeeded if we listened to new ideas and had a positive attitude. Next time
we had a challenge we listened and had a positive attitude and complete the challenge with flying colors.
Come on Sophie! Just a little bit further! Those were some of the words that made me want to complete the ropes course. The instructors for the ropes course taught you a lot about physical strength. On the ropes course you had to learn how to balance your body weight and concentrate on what you were doing. You couldn't be talking to your friend on the ground while you were crossing the rope bridge. You had to concentrate your mind and body on completing your goals. Right arm on the right side, left arm on the left side, right foot take a step on the knot--you had to keep on telling yourself what to do or else you might fall.
Blackness. Midnight, scary, strange noises, breathing. Blackness. The night walk was all of those words and more. It was exhilarating, refreshing, wonderful, and terrible, all at once. You had to learn how to close your eyes and open your ears. You also needed your smell and touch. You had to learn how to become the path, feel for roots, rocks, and other rough terrain.
Nature is everywhere at Sargent Camp. We went on many hikes in which we learned a lot about nature. I learned how to recognize a Hemlock tree, what a wasps nest looks like, what sound a woodpecker makes, and much more. I loved being out in nature at Sargent Camp.
All in all we learned a lot at Sargent Camp. In just three days we learned things we would never forget.
