Click here for a brief overview of the Ed Young Curriculum Guide developed by educators during the 1999 Summer Institute.

Ed Young visited Miss Lockwood's first and second grade class, together with their cross-grade mentors in Ms. Alloway's fifth grade class. Mr. Young showed the children how to use collage when illustrating an idea. First the children were read a variation of The Seventh Mandarin without being shown the illustrations. Next, the students were divided into small groups, and each group was given a page of text to illustrate. Only after each group completed their collaborative collage were they shown the actual illustrations created by Mr. Young for his book. |

In this activity the children were asked to show their impressions of the relationship between a king and his people. Ed Young's own illustrations for the published book are set in China. (One of the goals of the curriculum guide is for students to gain knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture.) |
| With students from Ms. Singer's and Ms. Steron's classes, Ed Young demonstrates paper cutting techniques and talks about the different media he uses in his work. Collage, water colors, pastels, graphite, and paper cutting are all techniques that Hastings students have become familiar with through Ed Young. | ![]() |

The children had the opportunity to ask the author questions. One child asked, "Do you keep a journal by your bed so you can write down new ideas as soon as you get them?" Here, Young is sharing his journal, and says, "I take this little book everywhere I go!" |
| Not only have the children gained an appreciation for the various techniques employed by illustrators to depict stories; they have seen firsthand a celebrated illustrator in the act of creating artwork. |
