National Poetry Month 2002

Langston Hughes

This year the Arts Created Together Committee has sponsored poet Teresa Cader as Poet-in-Residence at Hastings. Fifth graders have worked with Ms. Cader to write original poems taking inspiration from the work of Langston Hughes.

Many students read their poems at a special All School Meeting honoring the 100th anniversary of the birth of Langston Hughes. Click here to read their poems.

Cake Nefe

Ms. Cader was presented with a specially made work of art -- a papier mache cake entitled Paper Cake in Black and White. This cake is frosted with poems by Langston Hughes. All of the students in our school were treated to a real piece of birthday cake in honor of the poet later in the day.
