Volunteer Information

The Big Backyard program uses nature walks to provide hands-on learning in science and social studies, while incorporating writing, math, and art as well as the student’s own natural curiosity. These walks are designed specifically for Hastings by naturalist Bev Morrison, recipient of the MA Excellence in Environmental Education award. Parent volunteers lead small groups of 4 to 6 students on walks in the Hastings schoolyard. Volunteers get training for their specific walks and are given all the necessary supplies. No experience is required!

Becoming a BBY volunteer is a wonderful way for parents to share in their child's education. BBY is completely run by parent volunteers and we hope you will continue to support BBY this coming schoolyear. Each class needs 4-5 BBY parent volunteers to lead walks and a BBY Room Coordinator who will coordinate the walk schedule with the teacher and walk leaders. To volunteer to be a Big Backyard Room Coordinator or Walk Leader, or to find out more about BBY, please contact , 862-7097.
