Hastings Multicultural Potluck
November 15, 2001

The Anti-Bias Committee sponsored a potluck supper to celebrate diversity in our community. Families came to share dishes that represent their culture and family.

Noted storyteller and children's author Norah Dooley presented a special "story catching" session. She is the author of Everybody Cooks Rice, Everybody Bakes Bread and Everybody Serves Soup, multicultural stories involving food. There was also an art table where children could use art materials to create food on a plate.

We will be collecting recipes for the food prepared for this event for a Hastings Family Cookbook. If possible, please email your recipe for your dish to abrams17@bellatlantic.net.

Families were encouraged to dress in traditional clothing. These beautiful costumes added a wonderfully festive international flavor to the event.

The food looked and smelled so tantalizing that hungry families had a hard time waiting for their turn to help themselves at the potluck table. But all agreed it was worth the wait. Recipes submitted will be printed in a Hastings Multicultural Potluck Cookbook!

Children created artistic representations of foods on paper plates for use in a collaborative potluck mural

Here is a look at the finished mural.

The Anti-bias committee brought storyteller Norah Dooley to the event. Norah is the author of a series of popular children's books that celebrate multiple cultures through the common threads of shared foods.

Norah held the children spellbound with her exciting stories drawn from all corners of the globe.

Here is a selection of the wonderful centerpieces created by Hastings students for the potluck. The centerpieces were raffled off at the end of the event and raised over $200 for the New York schools affected by the WTC disaster.
