The students learned that a compass is an instrument that has a small magnet inside it, making its red arrow always point to "N" (north).
In holding the compass with the "N" pointing north, one can clearly see how to turn in the correct direction to travel north, south, east or west.
The Hastings Orienteering Challenge Course has eight stations that the children need to locate with the use of their compasses.
At each station, the children draw or write their observations of that area.
This is the second year Miss Lockwood's class has participated in the Hastings Orienteering Challenge Course. Returning second graders were excited to tackle the new course, and the first graders are eagerly looking forward to next year's challenge!
