| The students learned that a compass is an instrument that has a small magnet inside it, making its red arrow always point to "N" (north). |
| In holding the compass with the "N" pointing north, one can clearly see how to turn in the correct direction to travel north, south, east or west. |

| The Hastings Orienteering Challenge Course has eight stations that the children need to locate with the use of their compasses. |
| At each station, the children draw or write their observations of that area. |
